Post #7: Non-toxic Targeted Alternative Cancer Therapies: anti-cancer botanicals and re-purposed drugs

Highlights from the International Integrative Oncology Conference – San Diego, April 2016

presentation by Jeffrey Dach MD, drdach.com

Dr. Dach presented a large amount of research and his slides showed many diagrams showing what is happening on a molecular level with these alternative cancer therapies in killing cancer. I am distilling it all down to the names of substances and a rough description of how they work.

Artemesinin, or wormwood, has been found to be effective against 55 cancer cell lines, including pancreatic, lung, colon, breast, ovarian, prostate, and even the central nervous system because it can cross the blood brain barrier. Iron feeds cancer… cancer cells uptake iron at a tremendous rate. Artemesinin oxidates that iron to bring about the death of the cancer cell. Chelators that remove iron render artemesinin’s anti-cancer mechanisms ineffective. In fact, Dr. Dach supplements with iron when he administers artemesinin to increase the effects. Artemsinin’s effectiveness is amplified when taken with garlic and resveratrol.

Several other anti-malarial drugs and botanicals are also anti-cancer:
• Taxol
• Quinine
• Curcumin
• Resveratrol
• Methotrexate
• Doxycycline
and many more…

The following target cancer stem cells, responsible for the formation of tumors:
• Berberine
• Resveratrol
• Vitamin D3
• Curcumin
• Feverfew
• Sulforaphane (from broccoli)

Other botanicals and re-purposed drugs and their anti-cancer properties:
• Vitamin K2 induces apoptosis, or cancer cell death
• Sulfasalazine, a drug used for auto-immune diseases also kills cancer cells by oxidizing the iron inside them.
• Milk thistle suppresses expression of breast cancer and supports the liver in detoxification.
• Ivermectin, a drug used for lice, scabies, heartworm, and other parasites has been found to be highly effective against cancer and has little to no side effects. Dr. Dach believes that every cancer patient should be given Ivermectin.

My notes
In my post, The Devils Inside, I outline my story as to how I personally discovered the effectiveness of Artemisinin, or wormwood, as well as the basis of a theory as to why killing parasites might be effective in one’s battle with cancer. It is one of the first things I recommend people who have been diagnosed with cancer do. Parasites are a drain on your immune system and many of the substances I have personally found to be effective in my battle with cancer, happen to be parasiticides. It is a two-week cleanse and caution must be exercised if you are undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. Talk to your oncologist if you are on any pharmaceutical that may react adversely with it.

I was fascinated by the information on iron and wormwood. My cancer most likely came to thrive because I was iron-overloaded. Since iron feeds cancer, getting rid of excess iron has been an effective method for me to keep cancer from thriving. But seeing the research on how artemisinin can use the iron inside cancer cells to kill them makes me rethink my protocol. I will still try to keep my iron levels down but when I cleanse with wormwood twice a year, I will supplement with iron for those two weeks to allow the wormwood to not only keep my body free of parasites, but to also kill off any cancer cells that might be loitering and thinking about causing trouble.

I attended the 14th annual International Integrative Oncology Conference in San Diego as well as the accompanying Answers for Cancer Summit. The former is directed towards integrative oncologists and other cancer care professionals and the latter is for patients, caregivers, and other “laymen” interested in integrative and alternative cancer therapies. It is put on by Annie Brandt, a 15-year cancer survivor and founder of the Best Answer for Cancer Foundation (www.thebestanswerforcancer.org) and I was truly impressed by the credentials of the presenters and the quality of the information presented. Truthfully I was a little over my head at times during the professionals conference as they bandied about acronyms faster than I could Google. Although they presented slide upon slide on medical research, I am not including the complete references for the most part because of the time required. I am only providing highlights, and only of subjects I deemed relevant to our day-to-day lives as cancer patients. I have tried to translate into laymen’s terms and provide just enough information so that you can research more fully on subjects that interest you. I encourage you to discuss these subjects with your oncologist. It was very comforting and refreshing to be surrounded by doctors and health professionals who absolutely understand the role of diet and lifestyle in fighting this devastating disease and incorporate this knowledge into their oncology practices.
